Have I Been Pwned Going Open-source
The idea behind Have I Been Pwned was so appreciated that millions of users turn to the site for checking whether their passwords were compromised or not. All you need to do is put in your email address into the search box and check, and the site would look into hundreds of databases it got from the various breaches and tell if your credentials were compromised or not. Several password managers including the 1Passoword, Google and Apple have been using Have I Been Pwned to notify their users via browsers about password breach. While the idea is living for six years, the creator of it, Troy Hunt has announced it to be making open-source finally. The decision was inspired by Troy’s failed efforts of being acquired by some company, and also to increase the reach. By open-sourcing, it would allow anyone to see the codebase of the site and develop it further. The breach look-up has been free since the beginning though. Well, though announced now, it’s not going open-source right away, as Troy said he wanted to make sure the databases aren’t falling in the wrong hands after this move.
