Advantages of Under Fingerprint Sensor Disadvantages of in-display Fingerprint Sensor What is an Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor? List of Best Smartphones with In-display Fingerprint Sensor

What are the advantages of under-display fingerprint sensors?

To start with, the front-mounted in-display or under-display fingerprint sensor feels more natural (debatable). That’s where prominent brands like Samsung, OnePlus, and Apple used to place them before the full-view screens required these sensors to be shifted to the back. A front-mounted sensor is also more convenient to use when your phone is resting on your table. Apart from returning the fingerprint reader to the front, the under-display sensors will also allow for a broader scanning area. For instance, sometime in the future, you could simply place your thumb anywhere on the screen while pulling your phone out of your pocket to unlock your phone seamlessly. And lastly, the new in-display fingerprint sensors can work with mildly wet and greasy hands. That’s something you don’t get with capacitive fingerprint sensors.

What are the Disadvantages of In-display fingerprint sensors?

There are some cons involved as well. One obvious disadvantage of under-display fingerprint sensors is that both the optical-type and ultrasonic sensors are inherently slower and have a higher error rate than the capacitive ones. They don’t always work well with third-party screen protectors and tend to get slower over time (you have to reconfigure your fingerprints to fix speed and accuracy). Capacitive sensors are relatively easier to locate and access without looking at the screen. Another downside is that they could add to the repairing cost as smartphone screens are quite vulnerable to damage.

What about Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensors?

They work on 3D mapping and are thus very hard to fool. Like the standard fingerprint scanners, this one also touts about a 1 percent error rate. They are less affected by wet hands, food grease, oil, or dirt. They are faster in registering fingerprints if not in unlocking. you can just tap and lift your finger while the phone does the unlocking in the next split second.
